WINTER MAINTENANCE

Things are definitely cooling down. Arizona, Florida and California are starting to look pretty good right now. Whether you stay around for the lovely Washington winter or travel to the warmer climates, there are always maintenance and preparations you should do to your RV.
If you plan to stick around - and use your RV, Remember:

  • Batteries are hard to charge in cold weather. They charge slowly and discharge quickly.
  • Battery loads are higher in cold weather. The furnace is the heaviest user of battery power (the blower). Furnaces require adequate voltage to drive the blower that provides combustion air. If batteries are low, the furnace will not ignite.
  • Starting vehicle engine or generator requires more battery in cold weather.
  • Batteries should be disconnected, removed or fully charged.
  • Water heater plumbing is exposed and may freeze and burst.
  • Water supply hoses will freeze if left pressurized and connected to the RV pressure fitting.
  • Holding tanks can freeze. Dump valves can and will freeze and become unusable until thawed.

If you are going to store your RV for the winter you’ll need to winterize.
Storing your RV for cold weather requires draining the fresh water AND the water heater.
The entire water distribution system should be drained through a low point drain, or by blowing the pipes clean, using compressed air.
Don’t forget the water supply to the toilet. Make sure it is drained thoroughly.

To protect your RV, non-toxic antifreeze should be pumped through all lines. If you choose not to do this, at least the kitchen and wash basin traps should be filled with non-toxic antifreeze. Even non-toxic antifreeze IS TOXIC in concentrated form. Make sure you flush well when preparing your RV for use after the winter storage.
